Dog Agility
Agility
Dog agility is a timed and scored event in which a handler directs a dog through a series of obstacles. A handler will use vocal commands and/or hand signals to lead their dog through a variety of paths and challenges.
Obstacles
Obstacles themselves consist of an apparatus designed to challenge both the dog and the handler. Typical obstacles include a variety of jumps, weave poles, tunnels, chutes, a-frame, teeter totter, table, dog walk and pause boxes.
Rules
Speed and precision are key in agility. Staying on course, doing the obstacles in correct order, completing every obstacle (weave poles, walks) without exiting or jumping off earlier are just a few of the scoring points and rules of agility.
Challenges
Agility requires special instruction and direction from a handler. Crossovers, distance leading, differentiating between obstacles are just a few of the challnges in agility for dog and handler.
Learning Agility
There are many ways to learn and practice agility. As with all training, rewarding good behaviour and creating opportunities for success are key. Basic obedience is an important place to start. Next you can find a local club, experienced handler, or utilize the many online resources for pointers on how to proceed with basic agility.
