January Ramblings
I generally like to write on topics or do updates but today I just want to ramble. I have been thinking about this for a while and wanted to share it. It’s not anything new or amazing, it’s just on my mind. We all have tendencies in life and as trainers. I find that our dogs while different tend to have some similar strengths due to what I would call our confident skills. I watch some of the top disc dog teams and their routines sort of seem the same from event to event. They have their trademark moves and skill sets. It makes sense and I am not saying that there are not constant tweaks and innovations. Moreso i am wondering what skills my dogs have that i have not discovered due to habits or routines I may have formed in training and play. Flipping for example could be a place where someone else could throw the disc and get an entirely different motion from my dog. I will wrap this up with a pledge to seek out new life on new planets by forcing myself out of routine. Like closing one eye or throwing all lefty or copying someone else’s routine. Ron Watson and Apryl Lea have a cool idea to write the skills and sequences on note cards, mix them up and go. This doesn’t address skills i do not know but does change flow.
Results are in…Canis Major #2
Saturday was Canis Major #2 – our second of 5 freestyle events for Jason and Lilli in Plant City, FL. Kai also debuted in her first D/A event with me as her handler.
Choosing a Superstar – Kai Bear
Have you ever seen that movie Sliding Doors? The movie basically points to the notion that each little choice you make can completely change the future. I think about that concept a lot.
DragonLilli on the FS Scene
This past weekend Lilli FINALLY had her first competition freestyle event at Canis Major #1 in Plant City, FL on Saturday. Jason is the handler for the 5 part competition series – he and Lilli have been gelling really well and he handles pressure and crowds like a pro!
Lilli Leaping A disc dog jump drill
Lilli’s jump has always seemed a little off to me. In her defense, this is likely a result of inconsistent disc placement. We really never considered placement of the disc in our first 6 months of throwing discs for Lilli. That and she does not seem to be an explosive leaper naturally.
Long Legged Leila Monster
Leila has been a great teacher to me. When we got Lilli, she was already 4 months old and didn’t go through the puffy 9 week old bear stage or the basics of interacting with humans. She was already sound and chill and had a strong foundation with lots of time with her momma. In Lei’s case, I was essentially her momma – she was so fragile and teensy when we got her – yet inquisitive and very doggy. She LOVED her big sister.
Can I get a WITNESS? – ADOPTED
Witness has found a home. Thanks for everyone’s interest and support!
Check out this awesome BC boy. He just came up for rescue tonight – a bit too much for his owner to handle.
September DragonDogs Update
Wow a month since my last post. I guess I was on dog training overload. Andrea and I with the three dogs drove to Michigan for a disc dog camp with Ron Watson and then to Ancaster, Ontario for an agility skills camp with Susan Garrett. Since we got back we have been paying extra attention to our marketing clients after 14 days of limited communication.
Frisbee to Shape Contacts
When we first started training Lilli in agility it just sorta happened. We did obedience classes first and agility sounded fun so we took that class then kept going. We thought it would just be something fun to play with between frisbee trainings. In our advanced agility course, I brought the disc out once as a reward motivator while in class and Lilli went bonkers and wouldn’t work. I decided then that we needed to keep the two sports separate and never even brought discs to the field when we went to practice agility.
My Dog Can Do What?!
Since we’ve moved to our new house and have a huge yard to train the girls, Lilli has just blown up. Even her body is intense now – no fat at all – solid muscle and bones. Her endurance, even in the 95 degree Florida summer, is fantastic and she demands play at least 2x a day.
