February 2010 DragonDogs Review
By now you know about Moxie. Andrea wanted a dog to be all hers and she landed a frizbeast, a cattle dog she quickly dubbed Moxie. At 30pounds Moxie is the smallest dog, but everything she does is big, from howling to leaping, Moxie lives up to her name with lots of attitude and style. In a few short weeks Andrea’s disc dog has worked her way through the disc dog handbook with flips and reverses and is currently the only dog in the house with a reverse chest vault. Thanks to Tracy Custer and Abby Cline for making Moxie a reality. They are a very happy team! Moxie took 3rd at the CFDDC AW invitational competing with Andrea. Check out their video here.
Finally Flippin in Puppyville
We’ve shared over and over about how Leilani is developing very slowly as a disc dog…slower than we’d like. For about 6 months, she’s been eating grass in the middle of very short sessions, even right in the beginning of sessions. She still loves the disc, but the disc practice outside has been very unproductive. We’d settled in that we’d focus on her being our “trick dog” since she loved shaping so much and didn’t seem to stress at all during long shaping sessions. We were hoping that in the next 6 months or so, she’d settle in.
Leilei Cuteness Caught on Tape
We’ve been practicing religiously lately – at least once a day with each dog plus shaping in the evenings and posting NONE of it to the blog… Sorry folks.
Emily requested a Leilani fix today – so shall she receive.
Long Legged Leila Monster
Leila has been a great teacher to me. When we got Lilli, she was already 4 months old and didn’t go through the puffy 9 week old bear stage or the basics of interacting with humans. She was already sound and chill and had a strong foundation with lots of time with her momma. In Lei’s case, I was essentially her momma – she was so fragile and teensy when we got her – yet inquisitive and very doggy. She LOVED her big sister.
Aussie Pool Party
Today we had the first ever Aussie Pool Party at our house. It all started when John Arnett told us that friends of his were looking for a performance home for an 11 month old bi female Aussie. My ears pricked up immediately….We’re interested! So John connected us with Ami from Mercury Aussies and we hit it off! Ami connected Sketch’s current family and us this morning so we can check her out and have an All-Aussie party at the same time!
Dogs that Eat Better than their People
Over the past month or so, I’ve been on the tear for the “right” dog food for the girls. We’ve been on Evo for 18 months or so, before that Wellness, Holistic Select, plain old rice and chicken and some short spurts of other less expensive foods.
Baby Leila Video – Day 1
I came upon this video tonight when I was cleaning off my desktop. It was so stinkin cute I had to post it for the world to see. Lilli is keeping a very close eye on her asking us…HEY what is this little stinky thing doing in my house with my Daddy?!
A New Puppy
I’ve never been excited about a puppy before. Growing up our dogs had puppies and I was generally sheltered from the experience. Then the puppies were sold off with the rare exception of a puppy we kept for ourselves. They were so tiny, being chihuahua puppies, and so fragile. I was as scared to break one as I was excite dto play with one. As an adult, I have only had one dog of my own, and that is Lilli. And as much as I wanted a frisbee dog, truth was i was more afraid she would not be a frisbee dog. When Andrea got Lilli for me, I told her this would be her dog, and Andrea agreed.
Leilani of Michigan
A disc-loving friend of ours, Ron Watson, just so happens to have a high-flying Leilani of his own – Leilani Kai. He shared a video of them in action and I thought you’d all love to see it. I’m hoping the Leilani name has something to say about her passion for the disc!
Announcement & Naming Convention
We are so excited to announce the arrival of our gorgeous red merle pup – Leilani – born January 16th! We are wildy fortunate to have contacted Ellen at Thornapple Aussies about her new litter of all red pups – and 1 red merle bitch was still available!
